I recently finished Jandy Nelson’s book ‘The sky is everywhere’ and it was so perfect. Everything about the book, every aspect of it will resonate with the YA audience of the book and to be honest it isn’t just aimed at young adults- even mature adults will connect with the heart warming book.
The book is about Lenny. A Wuthering Height obsessed, clarinet player, band geek who became sister-less few weeks ago. This book focuses on how Lenny learns to live with the grief of losing her sister, her sister who lived for her. After the tragic death of Bailey all eyes are on her. The book follows her journey of coping with grief, experiencing first love and loss, and just learning how to live.
The book is filled with wacky, lovable characters all stemming from a small town where everyone knows everyone. Lenny and Bailey are bought up by their green fingered, hippie grandmother. Her Uncle Big, who can’t seem to stop falling in love and getting married, is also part of the lovable mix. Bailey’s boyfriend, Toby, is shown to be affected by her death- and his connection with Lenny shows the extreme people go to deal with grief. The Fontaine brothers are also thrown into this small town madness- and one of the brothers, Joe, falls head over heels in love with Lenny but will she able to learn to love.
This book perfectly describes how grief can affect people, and shows how the absence of one person affect the lives of everyone around them.
The sky is everywhere is also filled with poems written by Lenny for Bailey which she jots anywhere and scatters them all over town. Each of the poems shows the reader to experience and understand the bond between the sisters. The poems also shows how every part of her life is affected by the ghost of her sister. The poems in this books have to be the best part of the book for me, as a avid poetry fan I don’t think anything else could describe the relationship between the girls.
Finally read this book, seriously its filled with beautiful poems, characters and quotes that you didn’t even know you needed in your life. Honestly go read this book- you are missing out.
*‘Grief is forever. It doesn’t go away; it becomes part of you, step for step, breath for breath…Grief and love are conjoined, you don’t get one without the other.’ Lenny
